05.04 – Pupil Distance
Pupil Distance
Overview
Pupil distance refers to the distance between the centers of the clinician’s pupils. This measurement is important for aligning the optical system of the loupes with the clinician’s eyes.
Proper pupil distance ensures that each eye looks directly through the center of the optical channels, allowing the clinician to see a single, clear image.
Why Pupil Distance Matters
Correct pupil distance alignment is essential for comfortable and efficient use of loupes.
If the optical system is not aligned with the clinician’s pupils, the user may experience:
-
difficulty merging the images from both eyes
-
visual discomfort or eye strain
-
reduced clarity of the working area
Accurate pupil distance allows both optical channels to work together, providing clear binocular vision.
Binocular Vision
Loupes are designed to provide binocular magnification, meaning both eyes work together through two optical channels.
When the pupil distance is correctly configured, the brain combines the images from both eyes into a single clear image, allowing the clinician to maintain depth perception while using magnification.
This binocular vision is essential for performing precise clinical procedures.
Measurement and Customization
During the fitting process, pupil distance is measured to ensure proper alignment of the optical system.
Measurements can be taken using specialized tools such as the Admetec FrameFit app, which will be explained in more detail later in the Sales Process section.
Each pair of custom loupes is then manufactured so that the optical channels match the clinician’s individual pupil distance, helping ensure comfortable vision and optimal visual performance.
Vertical Pupil Position
In addition to pupil distance, the vertical position of each pupil is also measured during the fitting process.
This measurement ensures that the optical channels of the loupes are aligned not only horizontally but also vertically with the clinician’s eyes.
The vertical pupil position is typically measured using tools such as the Admetec FrameFit app, which allows precise positioning of the optics based on the clinician’s individual facial geometry.
By aligning the optical system both horizontally and vertically, the loupes can provide a clear, comfortable, and properly centered image for each eye.
